Honeysuckle Cottage has been called the Green Ark of Australian Horticulture. It was created in 1977 by two internationally
recognised botanists/horticulturists committed to conserving the world’s fast diminishing horticultural diversity. Both owners
have a passion for garden history, for the herbs that we have inherited from around the planet, for the fragrant old varieties of flowers
from sweet violets to primroses and heritage roses, and for heirloom fruits and vegetables filled with old fashioned flavour, and perfect
for home harvesting.
Plant antiques are those varieties which have survived at least a century, while heirloom varieties have been passed
down through many generations in a family or community. They have survived extreme conditions many times, are genetically
very strong, and are ideally suited to gardens which must face the challenges of climate change. Some varieties at Honeysuckle
Cottage are at least 2,000 years old.
Honeysuckle Cottage is located on Bowen Mountain on the north east escarpments of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.
The nursery is set within acres of organically managed display gardens on a beautiful 1830s property with deep basalt soils,
wonderful views, and sparkling mountain air filled with the sounds of bellbirds and whipbirds. Yet it is about 11/2
hours from Sydney's CBD. For those who live too far away to visit, there is a mail order service available with 30 years
experience of successfully supplying gardeners with beautiful plants. See the section 'Catalogues'.
